Supporting VET Training & Skills Advisory
FurnishingWorks, part of FibreSkills Australia, is an industry-owned, not-for-profit organisation supporting skills development, training and workforce planning for Australia’s furnishing sector. We work with government, industry, unions and training providers, and collaborate with the Jobs and Skills Council, Skills Insight, to inform vocational education and training (VET) needs. As an Industry Training Advisory Body in NSW, FurnishingWorks advises the Department of Education on funding and policy for the MSF training package and advises the Victorian Skills Authority on vocational education and training (VET) for furnishing, in Victoria.
Australia’s Furnishing Sector: Craftsmanship & Modern Manufacturing
Australia’s furnishing workforce is a dynamic part of the manufacturing sector, spanning furniture manufacturing, cabinet making, joinery, kitchen and bathroom manufacturing, shopfitting, upholstery, picture framing and furnishing design. The industry combines craftsmanship, creativity and advanced manufacturing to create products and spaces for homes, workplaces, retail environments and public infrastructure.
Industry Evolution: Digital Technology, CNC & Automation Trends
The sector is evolving in response to changing consumer expectations, demand for customised and sustainable products, and the increasing adoption of digital technologies. Businesses are integrating digital design tools, CNC machinery, automation and advanced manufacturing processes to improve productivity, quality and precision, creating demand for workers with both technical and digital capabilities.
Workforce Challenges: Skills Shortages & Circular Economy Opportunities
Like many manufacturing industries, the furnishing sector faces workforce challenges including skills shortages, an ageing workforce and increasing competition for skilled tradespeople. At the same time, growing demand for sustainable materials, circular economy practices and innovative design is creating new opportunities for businesses and workers alike.
As the sector continues to transform, developing a skilled, adaptable and future-ready workforce remains a key priority to support innovation, productivity and sustainable growth.
