Cross-border Firefighting Training Project

A firefighter trained in South Australia may not be recognised in Victoria. Our new project aims to change that.

ForestWorks is set to lead a new initiative to align forest firefighting training requirements across South Australia and Victoria, helping create a more mobile, interoperable and deployment-ready workforce across the Green Triangle region.

Funded by Primary Industries and Regions South Australia, the 12-month project will bring together fire agencies, forest and land managers, industry bodies, training authorities and technical experts to identify and address differences in training requirements between jurisdictions.

ForestWorks will map firefighter skills, progression requirements and training pathways against nationally recognised units of competency and qualifications, helping build greater consistency across the two states.

A key outcome will be the development of a cross-jurisdictional forest firefighter skills pathway designed to reduce duplicated training, strengthen workforce mobility and support the faster deployment of personnel during cross-border fire events.

The project will be delivered through four phases: stakeholder engagement, research and documentation, broad consultation, and consensus building. It will also produce a detailed report demonstrating active engagement with regional agencies and land managers.

Ultimately, the project will help protect forests, regional infrastructure and communities across one of Australia’s most significant forestry and timber regions.

Stay tuned for further updates as the project progresses over the coming months.
